It is after a "very productive" meeting on Wednesday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, that Trump says an agreement is in the works for the entire Arctic region.
During the meeting, they "laid out the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and indeed the entire Arctic region," Trump writes on Truth Social, claiming that the solution "will be an excellent solution for the United States of America and all NATO countries."
When he later meets with reporters, he briefly answers questions about the agreement.
It's an agreement that everyone is very happy with, says Trump.
According to NATO, the framework focuses on NATO countries - and in particular the seven so-called Arctic allies, including Sweden - being responsible for the security of the Arctic.
Negotiations between Denmark, Greenland and the United States will focus on an assurance that Russia and China will never gain an economic or military foothold in Greenland, says defense alliance spokesperson Allison Hart, according to several news agencies.
Trump: Mineral resource
Trump himself does not want to answer directly whether the proposed agreement means that the US will take over Greenland - a demand he repeated in his speech in Davos just a few hours earlier. He is silent for a moment before answering:
It is a long-term agreement that is good for everyone.
According to Trump, the agreement will be valid "forever." He also states that it contains provisions on access to minerals for the United States, without going into details, CNBC reports.
From Denmark, the answer is clear: An agreement is welcome, but you won't get Greenland.
"In any case, the day ends better than it began," says Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen to DR, and he hopes that Trump's message can lead the matter forward.
But he also warns that Denmark will not budge on the crucial point:
The US will not own Greenland. That is a red line.
Rutte: Right on target
Mark Rutte says, according to CNN, that Trump's post on Truth Social is "spot on."
Read the post. You can see everything there. There will be more talks, says Rutte, calling the meeting with Trump "very good."
According to Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and envoy Steve Witkoff, among others, will be responsible for upcoming negotiations.
The agreement means that no additional tariffs will be imposed on European countries in February, including Sweden, Trump said.
