In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump calls Iran's demand for compensation for damage caused by the war an "interesting idea."
"Now I also demand compensation from Iran, for all the people they have killed and seriously injured," he writes.
Trump clarifies that he is referring to compensation for the families and loved ones of all those whose lives the Iranian regime has directly or indirectly had on its conscience. The president specifically mentions the terrorist network al-Qaeda's deadly attack on the American warship USS Cole in 2000.
“In addition, compensation should be paid to the families of the hundreds of thousands of innocent protesters that Iran has killed over the past 50 years, not to mention the 52,000 that have been killed in the past five months,” Trump writes, adding:
“I have instructed my representatives to strictly incorporate this into all future negotiations.”
Iran's conditions in the negotiations, in addition to compensation, include that the US lift the blockade of Iranian ports, remove sanctions and release Iran's frozen assets.
