"It seems like the best thing that could happen," the president told reporters during a visit to Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina.
The statement comes a few hours after Trump announced that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and its battle group will join another naval force, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which is already in the Middle East.
The ship, which is the world's largest warship, is sailing from the Caribbean Sea towards the Persian Gulf.
"It will leave very soon," Trump said earlier on Friday.
This is happening against the backdrop of tensions between the US and Iran, and resumed negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
"If we don't reach a deal, we're going to need it (the aircraft carrier)," said Trump, who earlier this week said he was considering sending more ships to the Middle East.
