“I will soon review the proposal that Iran just sent us, but I cannot imagine that it will be acceptable because they have not yet paid a high enough price for what they have done to humanity and the world over the past 24 years,” he writes on Truth Social.
The announcement comes after Trump rejected another peace proposal from Iran earlier this week.
Semi-state Iranian media, believed to be close to the country's Revolutionary Guard, have reported that Iran sent a 14-point peace proposal to mediating country Pakistan, according to the AP. The proposal is said to be a response to an earlier nine-point agreement from the United States.
Trump recently claimed that the war with Iran is ending, saying there have been no attacks since April 7. However, American military forces remain in the region and the blockade of Iranian ports continues.
That claim should be seen in the context of U.S. law: only Congress can declare war. The president can only authorize military operations for up to 60 days after Congress has been notified of an operation - a deadline that expired on May 1.
With a stalemate between the parties so far, a senior Iranian military official said on Saturday that renewed fighting against the United States is "likely."
