The White House has confirmed that Donald Trump will be in place at Flushing Meadows in New York on Sunday, but only to see the men's final in the US Open tennis.
For decades, New York resident Trump was a standing feature during the evening matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Months after he announced his presidential candidacy in 2015, he was booed by the audience and since then he has not been seen during the Grand Slam tournament.
But now Trump is returning to see the men's final. It will be the first time since 2000 – and only the second time in history – that a sitting president sees a US Open final on site. The last time was when Democrat Bill Clinton was in place to see the all-American women's final where Venus Williams beat Lindsay Davenport.
Trump has during his first year of his second term seen the Super Bowl final in New Orleans on site as well as the car racing event Daytona 500 in Florida and UFC galas in Miami and Newark, New Jersey, as well as the final of the club team World Championship in New Jersey.
Golf enthusiast Donald Trump has also previously stated that he will see the first day of play in the Ryder Cup – the team competition where the US meets Europe – at Bethpage Black outside New York later in September.
