Jimmy Carter was the president in USA's history who lived the longest.
"Our founder, USA's former president Jimmy Carter passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia", writes Carter Center on X.
Carter Center further states that Jimmy Carter "was surrounded by his family" at the time of death. Thus, Carter passed away in the place where he was born 100 years ago.
The media in USA praise the country's 39th president for his achievements both as president and for his efforts for human rights after his presidency.
"When he left the presidential post, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his pursuit of peace and human rights", writes the Washington Post in a first comment.
A Presidential Term
Carter came to sit as president for only one term, between the years 1977 and 1981. Democrat Carter was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan, and decisive in the presidential election was, among other things, the development in the Middle East and the many American diplomats held hostage in Tehran, Iran.
But Jimmy Carter continued his efforts for human rights, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
State Funeral
A state funeral will be held in Washington on January 9, announces the White House. President Joe Biden has declared the day a national day of mourning.
"I urge the American people to gather on that day at their respective places of worship, to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr", says Biden in a statement.
Carter Center announces that memorial services will be held in both Atlanta and Washington DC, and a private memorial service will be held in Plains.
The iconic landmark Empire State Building in New York will be lit in red, white, and blue on Sunday evening to honor the late former president.
