Donald Trump plans to cut thousands of jobs at the intelligence agency CIA and other spy agencies, sources tell the Washington Post.

The plan is to abolish 1,200 services at CIA and thousands more at other authorities working in the field, including the National Security Agency (NSA). The Trump administration is said to have recently informed Congress about this, according to sources for Washington Post.

The exact number of employees at CIA currently is not publicly known, but is believed to be around 22,000. However, no one will be laid off - the cuts are instead expected to take place through reduced recruitment and early retirement.

CIA has not confirmed the information, but a spokesperson for the authority says in a statement that its head, John Ratcliffe, is acting quickly to "ensure that CIA is responsive to the administration's priorities regarding national security".

"These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to give the authority renewed energy, opportunities for new leaders to emerge and position CIA to deliver within its mission", the spokesperson continues.
