"He needs to get our approval," Trump said in an interview with the American television network ABC News on Sunday.
"If he doesn't get our approval, he won't be around for long. We want to make sure we don't have to come back every ten years," he added.
When asked if he could imagine a new Iranian leadership that has connections to the current regime, he replied:
I would, to be able to choose a good leader, yes I would. There are many people who could qualify.
Trump has also previously emphasized that the United States must have influence over new leadership.
