"The fires are still raging in LA. The incompetent politicians have no idea how to put them out", Trump writes on his platform Truth Social on Sunday.
"This is one of the worst disasters ever in our country. But they can't put out the fire. What's wrong with them?", he continues.
The speed and scope of the flames sweeping over Los Angeles have put the firefighting infrastructure to the test and raised questions and criticism about the state's preparedness.
Among other things, some fire hydrants in the heavily fire-damaged Pacific Palisades were dry, while water shortages further complicated the firefighting efforts in other areas.
Sunday's attack on California and its Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom comes just a week before Trump makes his return to the White House. Newsom has responded by inviting Trump to Los Angeles to see the devastation with his own eyes.
At least 16 people have died so far in the fires, which are still spreading, and around the same number are missing. 150,000 people have had to leave their homes and over 12,000 buildings or structures have been destroyed.
"Thousands of magnificent houses are gone, and many more will soon be lost. There's death everywhere", Trump writes.
