The lawsuit was filed in a court in the state of Florida on Monday evening local time.
The lawsuit accuses the British media company of producing a "false, defamatory, misleading, derogatory, provocative and malicious portrayal" of the current president.
The background is that a week before last year's presidential election, the BBC broadcast a documentary with a heavily edited speech by Trump from January 6, 2021. The edit, where Trump's quotes have been cut, gives the impression that the president is directly calling for violence in the wake of the deadly storming of the Capitol building.
The lawsuit claims that the documentary “Panorama” was produced as part of “a shameless attempt to interfere in and influence the election results to President Trump’s detriment.”
The BBC has acknowledged the hard editing, apologized and senior executives have resigned, but the company has previously rejected Trump's claim for damages.
