U.S. Military Aid to Ukraine Paused? Swedish PM Warns of Serious Risks

If the reports that the US President Donald Trump will pause all military support to Ukraine are true, it is serious, according to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party). Peace is not when you let the aggressor get what they want, he says to SVT.

According to information provided to several media outlets, the USA is to pause its military support to Ukraine. The news comes just a few days after the altercation between President Donald Trump and President Zelenskyj at the White House on Friday.

If this is true, it is serious information. There is no doubt about it. Now, new things are emerging almost every day. We'll see what is implemented and what is a ploy for other negotiations, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in an interview with SVT's Morning Studio.

Trump has repeatedly accused Ukraine of not wanting peace, but no one wants peace more than Ukraine, says Kristersson, emphasizing that the problem does not lie in the Ukrainians' or Zelenskyj's desire for peace.

But a peace imposed on Ukraine with poor conditions is an extremely risky peace, says Kristersson.

"Not left empty-handed"

He believes that the risk in such a case is a very temporary ceasefire that turns into war again, and that a lasting peace requires Russia to understand that it cannot attack Ukraine or any other country in the region.

Peace is not about letting the aggressor get what they want.

A stopped support would mean that Ukraine would miss out on valuable material, but the Prime Minister points out that Ukraine provides a large part of its own weapon deliveries and Europe provides a larger part than the USA.

A fairly large part would disappear. But it's not like Ukraine would be left empty-handed in any way, says Kristersson to SVT.

He also says that the buildup of defense in Europe and Sweden will require "tough reprioritizations".

It will require reprioritizations, not from healthcare, school, and care, but that we are long-term prepared to allocate a larger part of our collective resources to defend Sweden.

"Ukraine's cause is ours"

Even the Social Democrats' party leader Magdalena Andersson believes that the information is very serious.

"Ukraine must be able to negotiate peace from a position of strength. Now, Europe must step forward to secure Ukraine's peace, freedom, and independence. There is no time to waste. Ukraine's cause is ours", she writes on X.
