To stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has been more difficult than what the American president initially thought. This is admitted by Donald Trump at a press conference together with the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Putin has really betrayed me, says Trump.

In front of a large press gathering at the Prime Minister's official country residence Chequers, the American President posted the text about his view on the Russian invasion war.

Trump promised during last year's election campaign that he would stop the war immediately after winning the election. On Thursday, he returned to why this had not been the case.

One never knows what will happen in a war. Things happen that are the opposite of what one believed beforehand. One believed it would be easy or difficult and then it turns out to be the opposite, said Trump, and claimed that the lack of progress in the negotiations is one of his "biggest disappointments".

For Starmer, Putin's full-scale invasion and support for Ukraine has been a main issue since he took office as Prime Minister last summer.

Sea that separates

However, Trump wanted to downplay this when he instead described it as the war "not affecting" the British in any decisive way. He admitted, however, that the United Kingdom is geographically much closer to Ukraine compared to the USA.

We have a whole sea that separates us, said Trump.

Starmer did not comment on the statement about the impact of the invasion on the United Kingdom, but instead changed track.

We must put extra pressure on Putin, he replied, and stated that the recent bloody attacks on civilians in several Ukrainian attacks do not rhyme with "a person who wants peace".

Regarding the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state, which the United Kingdom has plans for, Trump said it is one of the "few issues" where he and Starmer do not agree.

Both Trump and Starmer said, like before, that they are working hard to bring peace and stability to the Middle East. But no concrete messages about when the war in Gaza could be ended were given.

We are working very hard with Israel and Gaza, it's complex, but we will get it done, said Trump.

Military against migrants

On a reporter's question about whether Trump has any advice for Starmer regarding migration, the President suggested that his British colleague could deploy the military to stop undocumented immigrants.

I told the Prime Minister that I would see to it that I would stop it (undocumented immigrants coming to the United Kingdom), and it doesn't matter if you call in the military, it doesn't matter what means are used, said Trump.
