"General Caine, like all of us, would like to avoid war, but if a decision is made to take military action against Iran, he believes it will be easy to win," Trump writes on Truth Social.
Dan Caine is said to have warned in meetings that a military operation against Iran would entail significant risks, not least because the United States could become entangled in a long-term conflict with losses, two sources with insight told the news site Axios.
Described as clairvoyant
According to the report, Caine was comparatively more encouraging before the attack on Venezuela in early January.
According to one source, Caine is not advocating an attack on Iran, but is prepared to support and implement Trump's decision no matter what. Another source describes Caine as "clear-headed and realistic," rather than skeptical, about the chances of success in an armed conflict with Iran.
The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal have similar information. They report, among other things, that Dan Caine has pointed out that a shortage of ammunition - not least for air defense - and a lack of support from allies are increasing the risks for the U.S. military.
Donald Trump, who ordered American attacks on Iran in connection with the Twelve-Day War in June last year, dismisses the new media reports as incorrect.
According to Trump, Caine has not tried at all to discourage attacks on Iran.
"He only knows one thing: how to WIN, and if told to do so, he will lead the pack," Trump wrote.
“A very bad day”
The president further writes that he would prefer to reach a deal with Iran.
"If we do not reach an agreement, it will be a very bad day for that country and, unfortunately, for its people," Trump wrote.
The United States and Iran have resumed negotiations over Iran's nuclear program this year. At the same time, increased tensions between the countries have led the United States to send large naval and air forces to the Middle East.
