They will be met with exactly the same tax if they do not release it, and that is what reciprocity means. We can do it already today, or we can wait until Monday or Tuesday, but that is what we will do, says Trump at the White House on Friday, according to Bloomberg.

His comment came the day after he decided to postpone the tariffs on goods within USMCA – the North American free trade agreement negotiated with Canada and Mexico during Trump's previous term – until April 2.

Trump thus describes the now proposed tariffs as reciprocal, which is the same phrase he used for the broader 25-percent duties he postponed.

According to the White House, these tariffs will affect approximately 50 percent of imports from Mexico and 38 percent of imports from Canada.

Trump is also expected to proceed with sector-specific tariffs on metals next week.
