Donald Trump repeated his mantra early on Sunday that the USA "will get Greenland"!
Yes, 100 percent, he said in an interview with NBC News without explaining how it would happen – with or without weapons.
In Greenland, the new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responds with a post on Facebook.
"We will listen when others talk to us. But we will not be intimidated", he writes and continues:
"President Trump says that the USA 'will get Greenland'. Let me be clear: The USA will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future."
Security purposes
Greenland is a highly self-governing part of Denmark, which is a NATO country.
The USA has long had great opportunities to use Greenland for military purposes, but Trump emphasizes to NBC that the large island must be under American control for security reasons.
You have ships sailing outside Greenland from Russia, from China and from many other places. And we will not allow things to happen that harm the world or the USA, he says.
React with calm
The USA's assertive claims have sparked concern and irritation in Denmark and Greenland, where interest in an American takeover seems weak, even though a discussion about future independence continues.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen urges the inhabitants to remain calm.
"We should not react with fear. We should react with calm, dignity, and unity. It is through these values that we will clearly, clearly, and calmly show the American president that Greenland is ours", he writes.
"That's how it was yesterday. That's how it is today. And that's how it will remain".
