Trump on Market Turmoil: Tariffs Are the Necessary Medicine

The President of the USA, Donald Trump, likens the trade tariffs he has introduced against large parts of the world to "medicine" – and says that last week's sharp stock market fall shows that it has worked. He also confirms that China has backed down on the Tiktok sale due to the tariffs.

Donald Trump does not want the global markets to collapse – but he is not particularly worried about it either. He says this to reporters on board the presidential plane Air Force One, on his way back to Washington after a golf weekend in Florida.

Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.

World leaders got in touch

Many world leaders have got in touch and sought a solution regarding the tariffs over the weekend, according to Trump.

I talked to many leaders: European, Asian, from all over the world. They can barely contain themselves to get an agreement, says Donald Trump and adds that he has replied that the USA will not agree to have a trade deficit with other countries.

We will not have it, because for me a deficit is a loss. We will have a surplus, or at worst go plus minus zero.

China backed down on Tiktok

The President also confirms that the USA has reached an agreement with China regarding the sale of the American part of Tiktok, which was reported by several media outlets over the weekend, but that Beijing backed down after the tariffs.

Trump announced on Wednesday that he is raising tariffs on goods from China by an additional 34 percent, which led China to respond with equally high tariffs on goods from the USA.

We had a deal for Tiktok, pretty much, not a deal but close. And then China changed its mind due to the tariffs, says Donald Trump now and continues:

If I gave them a small reduction of the tariffs, they would approve the deal in 15 minutes. It shows what strength the tariffs have.

According to a decision by the US Supreme Court, Tiktok, which is owned by Chinese Bytedance, is to be shut down in the USA for security reasons unless the company gets American owners. But on Friday, Trump extended the deadline and gave the company an additional 75 days.
