The President of the United States came with very few news during his speech to the world leaders gathered in New York. Instead, there were many claims that lack a basis in facts.
Climate change, it is the biggest hoax that has ever been imposed on us, he said and continued:
The carbon footprint is a deceit that has been invented by people with evil intentions, and it shows the way to total destruction.
His words go directly against many research studies that state that climate change drives extreme weather, which threatens our planet.
”Been right about everything”
To limit the impact, most of the world's countries agreed in the Paris Agreement in 2015 to keep the increase in the global average temperature well below 2 degrees, and preferably below 1.5 degrees, compared to pre-industrial times. Today's plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are, according to the UN, far from sufficient – but go, according to Trump, much too far.
He claimed without basis that Germany's economy was collapsing due to the country's investment in green energy, or "the new green hoax" as he called it. And to the countries that want to invest in green energy, he sent a warning:
Your countries will fail. And I am very good at predicting things. It's true. I have been right about everything.
Chinese investment
Instead, he praised the US's "clean beautiful coal" which Trump wants to extract more of.
You (in Europe) need strong borders and traditional energy sources, he said, referring to the combustion of fossil fuels.
He also claimed that China manufactures more wind turbines than any other country, but only for export. In fact, China is making a major investment in green energy and is building twice as much solar and wind power as all other countries combined.
