New York's former mayor, also President Donald Trump's former lawyer Rudy Giuliani, is awarded the US prestigious freedom award.
The message came from Trump on Monday, and in a post on social platforms, the president writes that Giuliani is "the greatest mayor in New York City's history, also a great American patriot".
Giuliani filled a unifying function in New York City after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
He later became one of Trump's legal advisors, but he lost his right to practice as a lawyer after he repeatedly provided false testimony about the circumstances of Trump's loss in the presidential election in 2020. In addition, he was convicted of falsely accusing two election officials of cheating in the same election. The two accused received compensation of nearly 1.4 billion kronor.
The message that Giuliani will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom came days after he was injured in a car accident in the state of New Hampshire over the weekend. The 81-year-old Giuliani suffered a spinal fracture, bruises and lacerations.
