The conversation on Monday revolved around Taiwan, according to state-run Chinese media, and Xi is reported to have emphasized that Taiwan's return to China constitutes "an important part of the post-war world order."
The government in Beijing considers Taiwan to be part of China, but in practice Taiwan has been self-governing and separate since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, when rival governments took over in Beijing and Taipei respectively.
The United States supports Taiwan, including militarily.
The White House, for its part, confirms that the two presidents spoke, but has not provided any further details.
Trump writes on his Truth Social platform that during "a very good phone call" the two talked about, among other things, the war between Russia and Ukraine, the fentanyl issue, and trade in various agricultural products.
The phone call took place just over three weeks after the two leaders met in South Korea, a meeting the US president described as "fantastic".
Trump has previously stated that he will travel to China in April and that Xi will in turn come to the United States "sometime after that."
