The statue captures the two men smiling in a dance step and with a plaque at its foot that reads "We celebrate the long-standing bond between President Donald J Trump and his closest friend Jeffrey Epstein".
The statue has been placed at the short side of the famous National Mall park in Washington DC, which also houses the obelisk Washington Monument and the temple-like Jefferson Monument. When the statue is viewed from the front, it frames the President's seat, the White House.
A group calling itself "The Secret Handshake Project" takes credit for the placement of the statue and says in a comment to USA Today that "we are a very small group of citizens using art, irony and humor to formulate social expressions and encourage political debate in public spaces".
The group has twice before installed similar art in the US capital since Trump was installed as president.
The friendship between Jeffrey Epstein – who has been convicted of buying sex from a fourteen-year-old and investigated for many more sex crimes – and President Donald Trump, has been the subject of intense debate and speculation lately. Expectations that Trump would disclose the investigation into Epstein's criminal activities have existed since before he became president for a second time.
In the election campaign, Trump promised that he would disclose the investigation, but his government has since backed down from that promise. It has given rise to speculation that the content is compromising for Trump.
