Professional groups such as analysts, salespeople, administrators, and IT specialists have many tasks that can be made more efficient with AI. However, there is no sign that ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar tools are behind layoffs in these occupational groups, according to TRR's data.

We see no clear pattern that occupational groups with high AI exposure have a higher proportion of layoffs, or have had greater difficulty finding new work, says Jacob Grönlund at TRR.

The organization has analyzed 50,000 dismissed salaried employees in the private sector during 2023–2025.

Changing the data

Whether AI will outcompete more white-collar workers in the future remains to be seen.

It's too early to say. What we do know is that it is primarily the content of work that is affected, says Grönlund.

A profession that is highly exposed to AI does not have to be negative, but can be seen as a complement that "enhances existing work tasks," according to TRR.

Strengthen competence

For those concerned about the new technology, the recommendation from the transition organization is clear: white-collar workers need to strengthen their skills in digital working methods and data literacy in order to "maintain their competitiveness."

What you should do is think about skills development throughout your professional life. This may involve taking a course or training - strengthening your skills in one or more areas to constantly stay up to date with what is relevant in the job market, explains Grönlund.

According to TRR, it is also crucial to be open to new technology.

Regardless of how much AI is used in a profession, it is always good to have a basic understanding. It is something that will, as we can already see to some extent, change the content of professions.

The restructuring organization TRR works on behalf of the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and the trade union organization PTK.
