"Even though many samples are tested and only a few cases are found, it is important that all wild boars are examined. It is mandatory under EU legislation that all wild boar meat intended for consumers be controlled," says Behdad Tarbiat, parasitologist at the Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA), in a press release.
Trichinella are parasitic worms that can be transmitted from animals to humans and cause serious illness.
Laboratories that perform trichinosis tests in Sweden report to SVA, which reports the total number.
Last year, 158,861 tests were performed on wild boar, 27 percent more than in 2024. The positive sample came from Stockholm County.
