A new side platform will be built on the western side, and when it is completed, the central platform will be demolished and the platform crossing will be closed.

"Örebro Södra is the only platform crossing in Sweden that is protected with sound and light signals and crosses two simultaneously passable tracks without barriers. We are now changing that, finally. We are increasing safety at Örebro Södra and no one will have to cross two tracks to get to or from their train", says Rami Yones, regional director at the Swedish Transport Administration Middle Region in a press release, according to NA.

The work is expected to be completed in the spring or summer of 2026. The pedestrian bridge on site will also be equipped with elevators to increase accessibility.

The accident occurred late in the evening when the three people – a 25-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman, and a boy in his younger teens – were about to cross a railway crossing at Södra station after getting off a passenger train.

The railway crossing in question had long been pointed out as hazardous.
