It offered relentless rain, low temperature, and wind when the first round of the major tournament on the PGA tour got underway at Torrey Pines. The tournament was originally supposed to be held in Pacific Palisades, but was moved to San Diego due to the fires in Los Angeles.
For Swedish world sexton Ludvig Åberg, it was the first appearance on the tour since he withdrew from a tournament on Pebble Beach on January 31 after the first round due to stomach flu.
I'm swinging pretty badly, I've lost some weight. I'm swinging a bit strangely, he said before it became known that he was pulling out of the tournament.
It was just at Torrey Pines the week before that Åberg got stomach flu. When the golf stars were back in San Diego, it became a first round two strokes over par for Åberg after four bogeys and two birdies.
With that, the 25-year-old is in a tied 25th place – six strokes behind leading Denny McCarthy, USA.
The tournament is one of the tour's so-called signature tournaments. Only the best get to play, and all 72 players in the starting field get to play all four rounds.
