An unfortunate own goal by Manchester City's Yui Hasegawa in the 77th minute was decisive when Chelsea won the league cup final at Pride Park Stadium in Derby with 2–1.
The Japanese player was in tears after the final whistle and was comforted by her teammates.
Nathalie Björn played the entire match in the backline and right-back Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was substituted three minutes before the decisive own goal.
Now one trophy is already in the bag, but Chelsea can take a quadruple in titles this season.
The league is led by the reigning champions with an eight-point lead and six matches left to play. The London club is in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and in the semifinals of the FA Cup. The team is unbeaten in all competitions this season.
The celebration of the season's first title is expected to be low-key, however.
My players are well aware of the rules, says coach Sonia Bompastor and continues:
They have to hold on until 9 pm. At 9:30 pm they should be in their beds.
Within the span of twelve days, Chelsea and Manchester City will meet four times. In addition to the league cup final, there are double matches in the Champions League – starting on Wednesday – but in between, there is also a league match between the teams.
