Tony Gustavsson is suspended for one match – and looks set to miss the World Cup qualifier against Italy in March. But the Swedish Football Association intends to appeal the suspension.

We now have the opportunity to submit a formal letter to UEFA and we intend to use this opportunity, says Lisa Eskils, press officer for the women's national team, to SVT.

Tony Gustavsson received a red card when Sweden faced France in the Nations League last week.

"I want to apologize for my red card. Everyone knows that I am passionate and emotional and sometimes it can spill over. I didn't think I said anything rude, but the fourth official perceived it that way and so I got a red card," Gustavsson told SVT after the expulsion.

The suspension from the European Football Association (Uefa) will be served in the first match of the World Cup qualifiers, away against Italy on March 3.
