The national team coach initially thought he wasn't allowed to communicate with the Swedish bench during the World Cup qualifier against Italy (1–0 to Sweden). When it turned out he was allowed to, by phone, he took the opportunity.
Gustavsson had direct contact with one of his assistant coaches, Niklas Egnell.
Rules are rules. As long as you follow them, says Johanna Almgren, an assistant who was given the main responsibility on the sidelines on Tuesday, about the setup.
Almgren notes that it wasn't so bad to have Gustavsson up in the stands.
When you see everything from above, you get a much clearer picture. On the ground it's more difficult.
On Saturday, when Sweden continue their World Cup qualifying campaign away to Serbia, Tony Gustavsson will be back on the bench. Things will be livelier for the players then.
"It was actually maybe a little calmer today," says striker Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
"But, uh, you like his energy and poise. Even though Johanna did great today."
