Tiktok states in a statement on its website that the American government has failed to provide necessary clarity and guarantees to the service providers that make the app available to 170 million Americans.
The US Supreme Court approved on Friday the proposal to ban Tiktok in the country due to security concerns surrounding the platform's ties to China. A deadline for Chinese Bytedance to sell the platform to a US owner expires on Sunday – otherwise, the service will be banned.
The background is that Tiktok is accused of giving China an opportunity to spy on American users and collect information about them. The US also believes that Tiktok is a channel for spreading propaganda, which Bytedance has denied.
Both Biden and incoming President Donald Trump have previously signaled that they will not immediately enforce the ban.
The threat of shutdown has caused several major profiles on the platform to react with concern about reduced revenue, reports TMZ. One of them is GloZell Green, with 1.6 million followers, who expects to lose large sums of money.
When the ban takes effect, American users will no longer be able to download Tiktok from, for example, App Store or Google Play. Those who already have the app downloaded will still be able to use it, but it will not be updated and thus become unusable eventually.
