"After serious indications that foreign parties influenced the election in Romania through Tiktok, we are now thoroughly investigating whether Tiktok has breached the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA)", writes Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
The suspicions concern, among other things, that Tiktok did not do what was required to prevent risks and in the handling of political advertising and paid material.
The first round of voting in Romania was marked by a sensational rise for the pro-Russian far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who quickly gained millions of followers on, among other things, Tiktok.
Since then, the result has been annulled and the election will be re-held in the spring of 2025.
Tiktok and Russia have previously denied all allegations of involvement in the Romanian election.
