A deal between the European Parliament and the member states was confirmed by a large majority in the parliament on Tuesday, with 606 votes in favour and 16 against.
The decision means that tariffs will be increased by 50 percent, while the duty-free quota will be reduced by almost the same amount.
Karin Karlsbro (L), who has been responsible for the parliament's handling of the issue, is, however, concerned that the European Commission has so far offered war-torn Ukraine quotas that are too small, despite promises that the country's position will be given special "consideration".
The Ukrainian steel industry is fighting for its survival. It is vital that the EU keep free trade open, Karlsbro tells TT.
