Despite criticism of sky-high prices and a campaign to boycott the event, interest in this summer's major football tournament is huge. More than 500 million ticket requests have already been received, according to FIFA.

This summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico is drawing huge crowds.

Fans looking to snag a ticket had to submit an application to be entered into a lottery for a chance to buy one of the coveted seats.

When the application period closed on Tuesday, FIFA said it had received over 500 million requests.

The greatest interest came from fans in Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Colombia.

Fans who registered their interest will have to wait. The earliest they will receive an announcement is February 5, according to FIFA.

FIFA has previously faced criticism for sky-high ticket prices and announced in December that it would introduce a new ticket category with all tickets priced at $60, about 550 SEK.

There is also a campaign on social media to boycott the World Cup in protest against the United States and Donald Trump.

The championship takes place between June 11 and July 19.
