Three people, two of them children, have been attacked by sharks in the waters around Sydney within a short period, the city's rescue service announced.

The latest attack occurred in Manly on Monday night. A man was seriously injured when a shark bit him in the water.

Earlier in the day, an eleven-year-old boy had escaped unharmed when a shark bit his surfboard at Dee Why Point, a little further north in the metropolitan area.

Further south, in Vaucluse, a shark attacked a twelve-year-old boy the day before. He suffered serious injuries to his legs and is being treated in hospital.

The incidents occurred after torrential rain in the area, which experts say makes the water murky and attracts sharks closer to shore. All beaches in northern Sydney were closed after the three attacks.
