Thousands of tourists are stranded in Lapland, Finland, public service broadcaster Yle reports. Flights have been grounded because of the cold.

Very cold temperatures have led to numerous flights from Kittilä, which is located near the large ski resort of Levi, being canceled throughout the weekend.

On Monday, according to Yle, the temperature is expected to drop to minus 40 degrees, and then slowly rise.

There is also a risk of crippling cold in northern Sweden. On Monday, SMHI issued a yellow warning for the Norrland mountains, citing a risk of severe cold with a high risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Airplanes can normally fly even in low temperatures, but extreme cold can create problems such as icing.
