Thousands of herring have washed up on the beach at Haväng on Österlen. The discovery was made last week – but what lies behind it is still unclear.

I don't really buy into the discussion about a trawl that has broken, says Michael Palmgren, operations manager at the Marine Knowledge Centre, to Sydsvenskan.

A dog owner on an evening walk was one of the first to notice the accumulation of dead fish on the beach.

There were herring everywhere, thousands, Haväng resident Sara Jones has previously told Ystads Allehanda.

One of the hypotheses has been that some kind of accident within fishing is the cause.

Michael Palmgren at the Marine Knowledge Centre believes that it may rather be a matter of a fisherman who has caught more fish than the allocated quota allows and then discarded the fish, but this is not proven.

The incident is being investigated by the Coast Guard.
