Every year, the Centrala studienämnden, CSN, looks back two years and checks the income of those who have received student aid. This is to ensure that the students have not earned more than what is allowed without reducing the student aid, the so-called fribeloppet.

In 2023, approximately 17,000 people exceeded the limit to a total amount of 464 million kronor. These individuals will now receive a repayment claim of an average of 27,082 kronor, which must be paid within 30 days, it's a tough economic blow, but it can be avoided. It can be difficult to keep track of how much one will earn in advance, and therefore it is important that one notifies us if something changes", says Charlotta Hansen, controller at CSN in a press release.

In addition to regular salary, income from housing or stock sales is also counted towards the fribeloppet. This also applies during the summer, when income is counted per half-year.

In 2025, the limit for what a person with full student aid per term can earn without exceeding the fribeloppet is 113,901 kronor per half-year.
