The traditional cheese rolling down the 180-meter-long hill at Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire was held this year in record heat and in front of thousands of spectators, reports Sky News.
"The slope was better than last year. It was optimal conditions, not too dry and a little soft, so it was a bit shock-absorbing when you rolled," says German Tom Kopke, who defended his victory from last year and will also take home the prize he was chasing this year, three kilos of Gloucester cheese.
No one knows how long the tradition has existed. The oldest surviving evidence is from 1826, when the competition was mentioned in a letter, but even then the custom was said to be old.
