This is why the Super Bowl is the music world's giant

Over 100 million TV viewers and the music world's absolute biggest names. That's how it went when the Super Bowl's halftime entertainment became the planet's largest music event.

Tonight, it's time for the Super Bowl, the final of the American football league NFL, with Kansas City facing Philadelphia in New Orleans.

The TV broadcast is one of the most watched in the USA - last year, it was seen by nearly 124 million people. A 30-second commercial slot can cost 80 million kronor, and the world's biggest artists are fighting to perform at the lavish halftime show.

This year, it's the world's hottest rapper right now who will deliver at halftime from New Orleans. Recently, Kendrick Lamar won five awards at the Grammy Awards, and it's the first time a hip-hop artist has been the solo headliner.

Growth and decline

But the halftime show hasn't always been this big. In the late 1960s, smaller, local talents performed, and the show was something entirely different from today's mega-productions that can cost up to 200 million kronor to produce.

The show's superstar era began in earnest in 1993 when Michael Jackson performed, and it continued with artists like U2, Prince, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga.

But by the end of the 2010s, the NFL realized it needed a boost. Stars like Pink and Cardi B had turned down performing, and the NFL was struggling to reach younger viewers. Moreover, Maroon 5's halftime show had flopped badly in 2019.

To address this, the NFL turned to music mogul Jay-Z. A contract was signed with his company Roc Nation, which was tasked with breathing new life into the show.

His first halftime show with Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and Bad Bunny took off on social media, and the Maroon 5 fiasco was soon forgotten.

In the following years, artists like The Weeknd, Eminem, Rihanna, and Usher helped raise the show's cool factor, and younger viewers found their way to the giant event.

Enormous expectations

Many believe this year's show could be the biggest yet. Expectations are enormous, and Kendrick Lamar is as hot as can be. It's his second time performing at the Super Bowl - in 2022, he guest-starred with Dr. Dre, along with others like Eminem and Snoop Dogg.

Lamar is also controversial, partly due to his feud with rapper Drake, but also because he has called the new US President Donald Trump "a fool".

Trump is also expected to be in the audience tonight.

Whether the NFL and Roc Nation will continue their collaboration is unclear - both are vague about the terms of their agreement. Jay-Z has won five American Emmy Awards for the show, which has led to speculation among music lovers that Roc Nation's next move is to bring out Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus.

Where: Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana.

When: Monday, February 10, 00:30 Swedish time.

Broadcast: Shown in Sweden on TV12 and streamed on TV4 Play.

Which teams meet: Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.

Halftime artist: Kendrick Lamar. His guest artist is Grammy winner SZA. There is also speculation that names like Black Hippy, Doechii, or Dr. Dre might appear on stage, but it's not confirmed.

Swift rumor: Most people expect Taylor Swift to be in the arena, but as a spectator since her boyfriend Travis Kelce plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Several American media outlets are speculating, however, that she might also appear on stage with Kendrick Lamar. The two collaborated on a remix of her song "Bad Blood" in 2014, and Lamar has also worked with Swift's songwriting partner and producer Jack Antonoff.
