There was no historic Oscar for Sweden or for Stellan Skarsgård for Best Supporting Actor for "Sentimental Value".
Actor Kieran Culkin instead announced Sean Penn as the winner for the film "One Battle After Another." It's Penn's third Oscar, and the actor, who has always gone his own way, was not present at the Dolby Theatre to accept the award.
Stellan Skarsgård would have become the first Swedish male actor to win an Oscar had he been awarded the statuette.
The Norwegian film had a whopping nine nominations and was expected to have the best chances in Skarsgård's category and later, notably in the race for Best International Film.
Missed Supporting Actor Oscar
Two contenders in the Best Supporting Actress category, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, were overlooked. The award went to Amy Madigan for the horror film "Weapons."
Conan O'Brien is hosting the gala for the second year in a row and is not known for political humor, but he made a surprising couple of jabs at President Donald Trump early on during the gala.
"We're broadcasting from the 'Have a Small Penis Theater.' I wonder if he wants to put his name on it too," O'Brien said, for example, after a commercial break.
Donald Trump has, among other things, renamed the Kennedy Center in Washington after himself.
Can write history
Ludwig Göransson could win two awards at the gala. He is nominated for Best Original Score for "Sinners" and for "I Lied to You", a song from the film, in the Best Original Song category. If the composer wins both, it would be a new Swedish record. No Swede has won more than three Oscars.
The hot-air drama "Sinners" has been nominated for 16 awards, a record. The main contender is expected to be the action satire "One Battle After Another" - not least for the prestigious awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, where Michael B. Jordan and Leonardo DiCaprio are favorites.
The gala is expected to last until 3:30 a.m. local time in Sweden.
