Greenlandic women who have had IUDs inserted without their knowledge can apply for compensation from the Danish state starting this spring, the Ministry of Health in Copenhagen announces.

It has become a major scandal in Denmark that the state secretly ensured that Greenlandic women remained childless. This program ran for over 30 years until 1991, and in total thousands of women may have been covered.

Now, the Danish parliament, the Folketinget, has agreed on a compensation program. Affected women can apply for 300,000 kronor (436,000 Swedish kronor) each from April 2026.

The move comes after a long and intense debate about Denmark's treatment of the Greenlandic population. In September, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen held a ceremony in the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk.

"Forgive me for the injustice that was done to you. Just because you were Greenlanders," she said then.
