Here are the profiles that will lead SVT's response to "After Five". It was impossible to refuse to be part of this new initiative, says Camilla Kvartoft.

This winter, the long-running "Go'kväll" will go into hiding and be replaced by "Sverige Live". Six days a week, SVT will broadcast a new afternoon program that will compete with the popular "Efter fem" on TV4.

Our ambition is for this to become a gathering point for people in the afternoon and early evening who want to feel updated, but also have company, says Camilla Kvartoft.

She will be one of the presenters along with Farah Abadi, Pernilla Månsson Colt, Alex Letic and Jovan Radomir. The broadcast time will be between 4 and 7:30 pm – with the news block inserted into the program.

Concerned viewers

When the news came that SVT would be closing down "Go'kväll", many of the program's loyal viewers became worried.

Well, one of the people who got a little worried was my mother, says Camilla Kvartoft and laughs.

But she can reassure her mother and other viewers that several features from "Go'kväll" will remain, including "Gör om mig". In addition, "Ask the Doctor" and the local material that has been seen in "Sverige i dag" will be included in the new program, which will also have plenty of room for culture and interviews with guests.

I think the audience will recognize a lot and we will also be treated to something new, says Kvartoft.

Underdelivered

When the news broke that SVT was planning a new afternoon program, critical voices were heard from TV4 who thought that the public service was imitating their successful "After Five." Christina Hill, SVT's program manager for culture, entertainment and lifestyle, dismissed this.

"It's clear that this is not a unique concept in any way. And we've been working on this project for almost three years. So it's not something you do overnight," she says.

Christina Hill describes the concept as "social television" which she does not believe SVT has been good enough at in the past.

To be honest, we have underdelivered a bit in recent years on this particular need. We believe that SVT has an important role to play here.

"Sverige Live" premieres on SVT on January 12th.

Facts: Café and magazine programs on SVT

TT

"Sverige Live" is just the latest in a series of afternoon and evening café and magazine programs that have existed on SVT throughout television history, in various guises.

First up was Ria Wägner with her “Hemma” back in 1956. In the 1970s came “Half sju” and “Sveriges magasin”. The 1980s saw the arrival of café programmes. The most remembered are “Kafé 18”, those from Norrköping and Sundsvall with Ragnar Dahlberg and Gunnar Arvidson respectively, and “Hallå Sverige” from Örebro – for a while led by Sten and Ebbe Nilsson from the dance band Sten & Stanley.

Since 1997, the program has been called "Go'kväll", which for the past 18 years has been broadcast exclusively from Umeå.
