Matthew Schaefer became the youngest defenseman to score two goals in an NHL game overnight when his New York Islanders beat Columbus 3–2. The deciding goal was scored by Sweden's Simon Holmström.

With tonight's goal, Schaefer (18 years and 58 days old) passes legend Bobby Orr (18 years and 248 days) as the youngest defenseman to become a two-goal scorer.

"Fun hockey to watch and fun hockey to play," Schaefer said of the match, according to nhl.com.

The Canadian's first goal came after just under six minutes of play when he was able to send the puck behind Elvis Merzlikins in the Columbus goal on the power play.

The second came when the Islanders needed it most. With one minute and seven seconds left in the game, they were down 1–2. Schaefer sent a loose shot from the blue line, but the puck found its way in via an opponent's stick and the equalizer was a fact.

Just 29 seconds later, his Swedish teammate Simon Holmström scored the decisive 3–2 goal. After the match, Holmström had only good things to say about Schaefer.

"It's been fun to follow him, to say the least. He's a fantastic skater and incredibly confident with the puck," Holmström said, according to nhl.com.

Schaefer was the first player to be drafted this year and has recorded ten points in twelve games. In October, he was named Rookie of the Month.
