Mette Frederiksen's Social Democrats are having a disastrous election in Denmark. The party is going backwards in several areas in the municipal and regional elections.

The vote counting is still underway, but it is already clear that the Social Democrats will not receive any mandates at all in the island municipalities of Fanø and Læsø.

"It is becoming increasingly difficult to be the party that embraces all Danes. In the coming days we will of course review what is behind this," says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

In the traditionally strong S stronghold of Fredrikshamn, a municipal takeover of the city's port has contributed to the Social Democrats losing from just over 57 percent of the vote in 2021 to 26.1 percent this year, according to preliminary results. The party has lost its place as the municipality's largest to Venstre, which received 30.2 percent.

In Copenhagen, a left-wing wave is visible that could mean that the Social Democrats lose the mayor's post in the Danish capital for the first time in over a hundred years.

Ultimately, it is my responsibility, says Mette Frederiksen about the decline in the country.
