Pope Francis' condition is reported to be life-threatening since his respiratory infection has worsened.
The 88-year-old Argentine has, according to the Vatican, received large amounts of oxygen and even blood transfusions, as tests have shown that his health condition can be linked to anemia.
Doctors have previously stated that the Pope suffers from double-sided pneumonia and bronchitis. But the great danger, according to the doctors, is that he will be affected by sepsis as a consequence of pneumonia.
On Friday, there were no signs of sepsis and the Pope reacted positively to the treatment he received, according to a hospital bulletin. But on Saturday morning, the Pope was said to have exhibited asthma-like breathing difficulties.
Francis has been cared for at the Gemelli hospital in Rome since February 14.
