The Pope has been in Spain this week, a visit that ended in the Canary Islands, where he raised, among other things, the situation of migrants.
He urged human smugglers to "stop and make amends", and urged migrants to do everything they can to integrate into their new countries and called on those countries to treat migrants better.
On Friday, as he was about to return to Rome, the chartered Spanish plane broke down, stranding the Pope and his entourage. A replacement plane took off from Madrid, but before it arrived, King Felipe VI lent his private jet.
A few hours after his planned departure, the Pope was able to leave Tenerife; he is expected to land in Rome late Friday evening.
