The number of forensic psychiatric examinations carried out last year is the highest in ten years, according to the National Board of Forensic Medicine.
593 examinations were carried out in 2024, compared to 555 the year before. The number of forensic psychiatric examinations, where doctors on behalf of the court investigate whether a suspect suffers from a serious mental disorder, has now increased for three years in a row.
Primarily, it was forensic psychiatric examinations of detained persons that increased in 2024, according to the National Board of Forensic Medicine.
In 2024, the proportion of examined individuals who were deemed to have a serious mental disorder also increased, from 56.2 percent to 61.7 percent. According to the National Board of Forensic Medicine, the increase "can be assumed to be a natural variation between years".
Examples of conditions that constitute a serious mental disorder are psychotic conditions with delusions, thought disorders, and hallucinations.
