It's been over 30 years since readers first met heroin addict Mark Renton, who was searching for drugs in an overcrowded toilet, and almost as many years since Danny Boyle's film version of the scene was etched into the retina of cinema-goers.
I'm incredibly excited to return to these characters, says Scottish author Irvine Welsh.
In "Men in love", Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie are in their 25-year-old age – according to the author, an interesting time in men's lives – and are trying to leave heroin behind and focus on romance instead.
This is not the first time Welsh returns to the drug-abusing gang of friends in 1980s Edinburgh. In 2002, "Porno" was released, and "Skagboys" from 2012 is a kind of prequel to "Trainspotting", following the characters Renton and Sick Boy before they become heroin addicts.
The film "Trainspotting" was Oscar-nominated in 1997 for Best Adapted Screenplay, won three Bafta awards, and became the international breakthrough for actor Ewan McGregor. A sequel, "T2 Trainspotting", was released in 2017.
