The closure is being carried out due to the national day of mourning announced in connection with Carter's death.
"NYSE will honor President Carter's lifelong service to our nation by closing our markets on the national day of mourning," says Lynn Martin, CEO of NYSE Group, in a statement, according to Bloomberg.
The stock exchange will also lower the American flag to half-mast during the day of mourning.
The New York Stock Exchange traditionally stops trading on days of mourning for deceased presidents. The last time this occurred was in December 2018, when George Bush Sr was buried.
Jimmy Carter turned 100 and passed away on December 29.
