The Government Tightens Up – 35 Offices Are Closing Down

Approximately 35 of the State's service centers will be closed in the coming years. Smaller allocations from the government mean that the operations will be tightened. It will be a gradual reduction, says the authority's director-general Åsa Lindh to TT.

Some time ago, the government decided to reduce the allocation to the State Service Center - offices where citizens can get help from authorities such as the Employment Service, the Social Insurance Agency, and the Tax Authority with various questions gathered under one roof.

Phased Closure

The agency's board has now established the direction for the work of winding down service offices during the years 2025 and 2026. A total of around 35 offices will be closed, 29 of which are provisionally named on a list (see below).

The reduction will take place in three stages. We will keep the offices as long as possible without exceeding the allocations we have. So it will be a gradual reduction, says Åsa Lindh.

We will still have the same mission as before, to deliver as good a service as possible at as many locations as possible in the country. And we will be able to offer good service to citizens.

Åsa Lindh reports that the work of informing affected municipalities and regions is underway.

We have initiated consultations in the first round, she says.

Different Target Groups

According to Åsa Lindh, the need for the State Service Center remains great, and she feels secure in that Swedes will still be able to be offered the type of service and help that is in demand, despite the reduction.

We will still have 110-115 offices. Last year, we had a total of 2.8 million visitors, an increase of four percent compared to the previous year. We have many different target groups. A large group is those who are not so digital and who have difficulty handling their affairs digitally. But we also have young visitors who do not have much experience with authorities, says Lindh and continues:

For us, it's about creating a sense of security and legitimacy for the state.
