The oppositional Socialists and a far-right party chose to vote out Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and his center-right government on Tuesday.
The minority government was led by the Social Democrats, but it had not even managed to hold power for a year. The government parties had only 80 of the Portuguese parliament's 230 seats.
Thus, Portugal is forced to hold a third parliamentary election in as many years.
The allegations against the government concerned, among other things, suspicions of a conflict of interest involving a law firm with ties to the Prime Minister.
A new election is therefore pending, pending the decision of the parliament's speaker, likely to be held in May.
