Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $40 million in damages to two women who claim the company's baby powder caused their cancer, several media outlets report.

According to the women's lawyer, Johnson & Johnson has long known that the talc in some of its products could be dangerous, but failed to warn its consumers.

The women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2014 and 2018. After Friday's verdict, they will now receive the equivalent of 167 million and 204 million kronor each, respectively.

Representatives for Johnson & Johnson say the company will appeal the ruling.

"They have no evidence," said defense attorney Allison Brown, according to The Guardian .

Johnson & Johnson, however, is facing lawsuits in which more than 67,000 people in the United States claim they developed cancer, most often of the lungs or ovaries, after using the company's products containing talc. According to The Guardian, the company has tried to resolve the disputes through bankruptcy, a proposal that has been rejected three times by federal courts, most recently in April.

The company has also previously been ordered to pay damages in cases involving lung cancer.

Johnson & Johnson claims that the company's products are safe to use and stopped selling products with talc in the US in 2020 and the rest of the world in 2023.
